Markwayne Mullin
Secretary of Homeland Security
Markwayne Mullin currently serves as the United States Secretary of Homeland Security. Prior to his 2026 appointment, Secretary Mullin served from 2023 to 2026 as a U.S. Senator from Oklahoma, and from 2013 to 2023 as the U.S. Representative for Oklahoma’s second congressional district.
Secretary Mullin is often recognized for his hardline stances on immigration or for some of his public conflicts, such as his 2023 spar with Teamsters president Sean O’Brien in a Senate hearing, where he threatened to fight O’Brien.
Less known are Secretary Mullin’s deep ties to Christian nationalism. Among the most concerning are Secretary Mullin’s affiliations with the far-right Tulsa group, City Elders. The group describes itself as a “national network of elders charged with the mission of governing the gates of every city in America to establish the kingdom of God with strength, honor, and courage.” And though it functions more as a political group, it holds IRS status as a church.
Secretary Mullin has maintained close ties with the group over the years, joining them to speak at various meetings. A recorded meeting from 2023 shows Secretary Mullin himself explaining his longstanding relationship with City Elders and the group's leader, Jesse Leon Rodgers. And at a meeting the year before, he bragged at a City Elders event about beating his children and threatening violence against his daughter's boyfriend.
Executive Director of Faithful America, Rev. Dr. Shannon Fleck, is familiar with Secretary Mullin’s background and affiliations from her time organizing and advocating while leading the Oklahoma Faith Network. Ahead of his confirmation to lead DHS, she spoke publicly about the threat he would pose in this new position of power.
Since his appointment, Secretary Mullin has confirmed our worst fears, helping to promote the “Rededicate 250” worship rally, and continuing to invoke Bible verses to sanctify the violent actions of ICE and CBP.
“Our nation was built on our founding fathers hitting their knees and praying for guidance, true guidance on what this great nation could become. Two hundred and fifty years later, we’re going to rededicate the United States to one nation under God.”
For his proud affiliations with far-right Christian nationalist groups in Oklahoma, and willingness to sanctify violence and political power with religious language, Markwayne Mullin is a 2026 False Prophet.
