FALSE PROPHET
Mayra Flores
U.S. Representative, Texas
Representative Mayra Flores (R-TX) was recently elected to Congress in a special election in June 2022, and is now running against a popular incumbent whose district changed in redistricting. As documented in a Religion News Service article called “The particularly Pentecostal flavor of Mayra Flores’ Christian nationalism,” Flores’ pastor carried out a “Make America Godly Again” outreach effort on her campaign’s behalf.
Flores has called Biden “president in name only,” and has called for his impeachment. Her campaign slogan -- “God, family, country” -- espouses not just her faith but her governing priorities. Prior to her election, Flores tweeted using #QAnon, but claims she actually did it to express opposition and now chastises reporters who ask her about it. These tweets have since been deleted.
Flores’ Christian Nationalist Rhetoric
Tweeted after her June election: “I am an Ambassador of Christ and becoming a Congresswoman doesn’t change that. Our Country belongs to God not a political party. I am here to win souls for God. Hallelujah.”
Believes “pastors should be getting more involved in politics and in guiding their congressmen” because “our pastors know our people better than we do.”
Captioned a photo of herself at the center of a group prayer: “It’s time to elect GODLY people who reflect our morals and values according to the Word of God…Thank you Pastors for being involved in your civic duties.”
Has appeared on Christian nationalist movement leader and fellow False Prophet Steve Bannon’s show ‘War Room’
At an October 2022 RNC prayer breakfast, Flores said: “Do not allow this government to shame you for who you are. Do not allow this government to shame you for your Christian values. This nation is a Christian country. That is who we are.”
Flores’ Christian Nationalist Policy Positions
Holds strong anti-abortion access views, calling the overturning of Roe v. Wade “a dream come true”
Advocates for restricting immigration, despite being an immigrant herself
Calls the Democratic Party the “greatest threat that America faces”
Spread conspiracy theories about the January 6 insurrection, tweeting, “DC police let them through the gates! This was a set up! Antifa is definitely among this crowd!!!"
Opposes equal rights for LGBTQ Americans, voting against the Respect for Marriage Act
By excusing the insurrection and refusing to call President Joe Biden legitimately elected, Flores has supported and helped mainstream similar stolen-election conspiracy theories and lies as spread by fellow False Prophets and Christian-nationalist movement leaders Rev. Franklin Graham, General Michael Flynn, Bishop Joseph Strickland, strategist Steve Bannon, and Pastor Tony Perkins.
