FALSE PROPHET

Doug Mastriano

State Senator, Pennsylvania

Doug Mastriano, a Pennsylvania state senator and failed 2022 gubernatorial candidate, has been called “the poster child for Christian nationalism.” He denounced the separation of church and state, claiming that the country was founded on Christian beliefs by “these Christian founders of ours.”

Mastriano attended the pre-insurrection Trump rally on January 6, 2021, and spoke at an earlier “Jericho March,” intended to help overturn the election in Jesus’s name.

Videos released also appear to place him at the Capitol during the insurrection. As of July 2024, he is facing an ethics complaint in the Pennsylvania State Senate, following an April 2023 report from Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington outlining a case to expel him from office based on his actions during the insurrection.

During his gubernatorial run, Mastriano’s inner circle included QAnon conspiracy theorists, self-described prophets, and close Trump allies. He was supported by and connected to Sean Moon of Rod of Iron Ministries, a militant sect of the Unification Church that glorifies the AR-15 rifle as an instrument of God’s justice and is closely connected with the New Apostolic Reformation movement and its promotion of dominionism and authoritarianism.

Mastriano’s Christian Nationalist Rhetoric

  • Predicts an inevitable victory in November because “my God will make it so”

  • Has said he’ll make the Christian nationalist policies of fellow False Prophet Gov. Ron DeSantis look like “amateur hour.” In October 2022, Mastriano promised to take a page out of DeSantis’s playbook and make sure that Pennsylvania law enforcement escorts “those planes of illegals…down to Joe Biden’s house in Delaware.”

  • Uses a campaign motto based on John 8:36: “Walk as Free People”

  • Held a primary-election victory party that resembled a worship service with fellow False Prophet Sean Feucht

  • On a pre-January 6 Global Prayer for Election Integrity call organized by New Apostolic Reformation leader Jim Garlowd: “I pray that… we’ll seize the power that we had given to us by the Constitution, and as well by You, providentially. I pray for the leaders also in the federal government, God, on the Sixth of January that they will rise up with boldness.”

  • At the Jericho March: “Do what George Washington asked us to do in 1775. Appeal to Heaven. Pray to God. We need an intervention”

  • Mastriano's campaign has been linked to high-profile antisemitic leaders and has employed antisemitic attacks of its own against his Jewish opponent.

  • After local pastors took out an ad criticizing his Christian nationalism, Mastriano responded by suggesting the Bible prohibits Christians from publicly criticizing elected officials

  • Is close to televangelist and self-declared Christian nationalist Lance Wallnau, a False Prophet dishonorable mention and leading figure in the New Apostolic Reformation. Wallnau has campaigned for Mastriano, declaring him a “Christian colonel” who is “anointed to lead.”

  • Has appeared on Christian nationalist movement leader and fellow False Prophet Steve Bannon’s show ‘War Room

Mastriano’s Christian Nationalist Policy Positions

  • Introduced legislation to mandate teaching the Bible in public schools

  • Targets LGBTQ equality by supporting legislation that allows adoption agencies to discriminate against same-sex couples

  • Scapegoats marginalized and exploited students by calling for a ban on critical-race theory and gender-theory studies

  • Enables white supremacy by proposing a “thorough review” of school district “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” plans and signing a law that bans the teaching of certain topics related to race in schools

  • Called legal abortion a “national catastrophe.” In 2019, Mastriano sponsored legislation that would enact a six-week abortion ban in PA, and said those who violate the ban should be charged with murder.

  • Many of Mastriano’s bills are based on models found in the Christian nationalist legislative playbook ‘Project Blitz,’ conceived in part by fellow False Prophet David Barton’s organization Wallbuilders

  • Has been influenced by Barton’s pseudo-academic teachings against the separation of church and state

  • Supports similar stolen-election conspiracy theories and lies as spread by fellow False Prophets and Christian-nationalist movement leaders Rev. Franklin Graham, General Michael Flynn, Bishop Joseph Strickland, strategist Steve Bannon, and Pastor Tony Perkins.
