Former Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò was excommunicated by Pope Francis in 2024. A controversial figure within the Catholic Church, he is known for joining Tyler, TX, Bishop Joseph Strickland at a pro-Trump, Christian-nationalist "Stop the Steal" rally building up to January 6, 2021. He has even repeatedly addressed the MAGA movement's ReAwaken America Tour, where disgraced general and self-proclaimed Christian nationalist Michael Flynn called him a personal mentor.
